Education leaders and teachers from as far as New York, Hawaii, and even Australia are hoping to learn lessons from Cincinnati Public Schools–the community learning centers that are experiencing success in neighborhoods throughout the city. Originally launched in 2001, the innovative model used in Cincinnati offers enriching programs such as full-service health clinics, tutoring and after-school activities that have helped to shape an inviting ‘hub’ for students and their families.
Since its inception, Cincinnati Public Schools continues to be recognized for helping to improve academic achievement. Most recently New York Governor Andrew Cuomo praised the initiative, complimenting Cincinnati’s on-point targeting of what kids need to be ready to learn. Leaders from Knoxville, Denver, Toledo and Louisville are taking note.
Research also supports the strides Cincinnati Public Schools are making. In 2011, Innovations in Community Research, part of the Cincinnati Childen’s Hospital Medical Center, found students experienced 2.5 to three times the gains on state math and reading tests when they worked with community learning center tutors compared to those students who did not.
