Community Schools: How to Build Support and Capacity to Lead to Successful Implementation Call – September 24, 3:00 pm EST

The community schools model is a topic that the YEO Network receives the most policy support requests on – their innovative and integrated approach to education has led to enriched student learning and achievement, increased family and community involvement, and improved community health and wellness. For many students, wraparound services that address the “whole child” are a vital complement to traditional classroom interventions. Please join us for a teleconference with Mary Kingston, Public Policy Manager for the Coalition for Community Schools; former YEO and director of the Minnesota Department of Education’s Office of Early Learning, Melvin Carter; and young elected official P.G. Sittenfeld, Cincinnati City Council member and Assistant Director of Cincinnati Community Learning Center Institute. The group will share their guidance and best practices on how to build community support and key allies as an elected official to help develop and implement community school models, as well as practical resources and toolkits.

P.G. Sittenfeld is a member of Cincinnati City Council. Born and raised in Cincinnati, after graduating from Seven Hills School, Sittenfeld attended Princeton University, and earned a Marshall Scholarship for graduate school at Oxford University. Following work experiences at Google and Time Magazine, he returned to his hometown to become the Assistant Director of the Community Learning Center Institute. All across Cincinnati, Sittenfeld works to help turn schools – otherwise unused in the afternoons and evenings – into hubs of neighborhood activity offering health, educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities for students, families and the surrounding community. He has written for The New York Times, Time magazine, and The Cincinnati Enquirer.

The YEO Network provides cutting edge programming, investing in the pipeline of progressive leadership and building sustained relationships with our members. We seek to provide the resources young elected officials need to effectively impact policy, foster their own development and professional growth, and elevate their leadership in the broader progressive movement.
