The Immigrant and Refugee Law Center opened inside Roberts Academy in February 2018. The other location is at the Academy of World Languages in Evanston. They serve families from 26 different countries.

Many of the families they help are asylum-seekers who are fleeing danger or dire conditions in their own countries, and they’ve already gone through the immigration process before coming to the United States.

“We help them with their next steps. We help them get their permanent residency or green cards, and then eventually they’re able to apply for citizenship,” said LeMaster.

Through the school’s partnership with the Community Learning Center, the families they serve have access to legal professionals, mental health experts and a 24/7 clinic.
