Residents in the Oyler – Lower Price Hill community have faced higher risks from toxic environmental conditions in the City of Cincinnati, including the highest risk of lifetime cancer. These issues can be attributed to the neighborhood’s long industrial legacy.

Through an intensive community engagement process led by Adelyn Hall, the Community Learning Center Institute’s Director of School-Based Neighborhood Development, the Lower Price Hill Resurgency Plan provided a blueprint for the revitalization of the neighborhood, anchored by the Oyler Community Learning Center. One of the priorities in the Plan was green space and tree cover to help combat the environmental health hazards to the children and families and improve the well-being and quality of life.

After several years of advocacy, Hall was able to secure the funding and built a collaboration of public and private partners to begin the transformation of the air quality.

With funding from Groundwork Ohio River Valley, Madtree Brewing Company, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, the City of Cincinnati’s Urban Forestry Department, and the Community Learning Center Institute, 70 trees were planted on the streets surrounding Lower Price Hill. Groundwork’s volunteer crew planted the trees and their youth workforce, including students from Oyler, will provide ongoing maintenance to ensure proper care and growth.
